Swedish carmaker Volvo eyes India as the next big luxury car market as it chose the country for the global launch of its first-ever three-seater luxury car.
The company launched the XC90 Excellence Lounge in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.42 crore. The plug-in hybrid SUV is a more premium version of the four-seater XC90 Excellence, which itself is a more premium version of the XC90, which is a full-sized SUV with 7 seats.
“It will be a game-changer for Volvo India. In the first batch we are rolling out only 15 Cars for a select few customers,” said Charles Frump, managing director, Volvo Car India.
The passenger seat in the new SUV has been given a miss for a footrests-cum- storage compartment for the rear passenger. The company chose India for the global launch of the XC90 Excellence Lounge since the country had been the biggest market for the XC90 Excellence. The company sold over 100 units of the latter in the country, Frump said.
Even as the auto sector is facing a downturn, Volvo’s optimism for Indian market comes from the 11% growth in volumes registered by the company, selling 1,159 units in the January to June period of 2019. With its recent launches, the automaker is targeting the luxury and ultra-luxury segment in the country.
“The launch of Excellence Lounge shows the level of luxury important for Indian customers,” said Frump.
